Your Name Shall Live On

Stella Magazine, September-October 2009
More details in my flickr

This is for you Tito Dougs -- and I swear this won't be the last. I hope that when people read my name on the pages of books and magazines in the future, they will remember you and the many great things you've done for everybody. You will never be forgotten, and this is my way of thanking you for inspiring me with your independence, your talent, your love for art, your generosity. This is for always being there for us.

I know you don't like the drama; I'm sorry if I still find it hard to accept the reality of it all, but I really miss you terribly and I love you.

Unexpected!

Okay - so I'm gushing about another magazine cover at 3PM. Forgive me, it's a Friday, the end of a really long and busy workweek, and we're at the cusp of a long weekend.

All these amazing covers are seriously making me wish more international titles are circulated here in Manila! Well fine we do have some titles, but they're expensive. Haha.

True to its cover feature, this photo by the fantastic Meisel - Sasha Pivovarova and Ash Stymest as gorgeous hobos - made me tilt my head to the side befuddled; until halfway through the thought I realized how brilliant it is.

On a serious note (I may be overreading, but whuttheheck), is a commentary, what with all the financial issues the whole world is facing. Luxury is overrated in these trying times, they say, and I think it's such a fantastic move for Vogue Italia to do this. Think about the glitz and glamor of magazine covers, with all its opulence and whathaveyou - and then this cover. (Although boho chic's sorta been around for a while now, not that I'm a fashion expert. Hmm.)

In any case, this is ironic genius.

Even the color scheme punches a hole right through the familiar universe of fashion magazines as I know it. Maybe I'm just really used to cover art here in Manila, with all the bright colors and fonts we've had the pleasure of seeing (Kris Aquino's Preview cover early this year with the neon yellow-green font comes to mind, haha) but this palette - earthy, muddy and dirty (pun intended) is just, for a lack of any better adjective, brilliant.

Brilliantly dirty. Delicious oxymorons.

Magazine Obsessions and Awesomesauce

Bjork and assorted visionaries. OMG Holiness.

Friends and relatives in the faraway kingdoms of Canada, America and Europe, if you happen to see this magazine lonely in random news stands in random corners of your random streets, please please please end its misery and purchase it and send it to meeeeee!

I will love it forever.

P.S., this cover is goddamnamazing.
